When we think of our living rooms, one of the first things that comes to mind is the sofa. It's more than just a place to sit—it's the heart of the home. Whether it's a cozy family gathering or a place to relax after a long day, a good sofa makes all the difference. But choosing the perfect one?

It's not always as easy as it seems! In fact, I spent days searching for the right sofa for my own home, and I found myself confused at first, not knowing where to begin. After doing some research, I realized there are a lot of details to consider.

Beyond size and style, there are small but important things to check that can make a huge difference down the line. Today, I'm sharing what I've learned so that you can find the perfect sofa for your space!

1. The Width of the Armrests

One thing that many people overlook when picking out a sofa is the width of the armrests. You might think it's just a matter of design, but the width can greatly impact your comfort. If you're someone who likes to lounge and stretch out on your sofa, you'll likely use the armrests as pillows. If they're too narrow, they can be uncomfortable to rest on. I've found that testing out a sofa by lying on it, not just sitting, is a great way to check if the armrests work for you. You don't want to end up with a sofa that looks great but isn't comfortable to lie on!

2. Sofa Height Matters

The height of the sofa is another crucial factor, especially for your leg comfort. The ideal height for a sofa seat is typically between 35 to 40 cm (about 14 to 16 inches). This height is just right for the legs, allowing you to sit comfortably without straining your knees. If the sofa is too high or too low, it can lead to discomfort and even muscle soreness over time, especially since the sofa is where we spend a lot of time sitting, after our bed!

3. Ground Clearance for Easy Cleaning

Have you ever tried cleaning under a sofa with no clearance? It's a nightmare! When choosing a sofa, consider the height of the legs or how much space there is between the base and the floor. Sofas that sit directly on the ground tend to accumulate dust and dirt underneath, which can be tough to clean. A little clearance is not just good for cleaning; it also gives space for a robotic vacuum to go under and pick up debris. It's a small detail that makes a big difference.

4. Adjustable Backrest Height

For those of us with neck issues (like me!), the height of the backrest is crucial. Some sofas have low backrests, which can leave your neck unsupported, causing discomfort. The best option is a sofa with an adjustable backrest, so you can change the height and angle based on what feels comfortable. This feature is especially helpful if you like to lean back while watching TV or reading.

5. The Angle of the Backrest

Just as important as the height is the angle of the backrest. The right tilt can make all the difference for your comfort. Generally, a backrest angle between 100 to 108 degrees is considered ideal for ergonomics. This angle helps keep your back supported and your posture correct. Of course, you should always test it out for yourself to see what feels right, as everyone has different preferences!

6. Seat Depth

If you like deep, cozy seats where you can curl up, this one's for you! The seat depth refers to how far back you can sit on the sofa. While I personally prefer deeper seats that let me sink in, too much depth can make it hard to sit upright, which isn't great for your back. Aim for a seat depth of around 45 to 50 cm (17 to 20 inches). This is typically a good balance between comfort and support.

7. Leather or Fabric?

Choosing between leather and fabric often comes down to personal preference, but it's important to understand the differences. Leather sofas are sleek and easy to wipe down, but they can be expensive, and some types of leather (like genuine leather) can get scratched or worn more easily. Fabric sofas, on the other hand, offer a cozy feel and come in a variety of styles, but they can be harder to clean, especially if you have young kids or pets. There are also options like "tech fabric" that combine the best of both worlds, being easy to clean but still comfortable. Make sure to think about your lifestyle when making this decision!

8. Functional Sofas vs. Regular Sofas

Some people love the idea of a multifunctional sofa—like one that reclines or turns into a bed. These can be great for guests or people who want extra features. However, keep in mind that functional sofas often limit the way you can arrange them, especially if they need to be placed near a wall for reclining. If you go for one of these, make sure it suits your living space and needs. Electric reclining sofas also require careful thought about cord placement and power outlets, so think about the logistics before you buy.

9. Sofa Frame Quality

The frame of the sofa is the foundation of its durability, so it's important to make sure it's sturdy. A quick test is to give the sofa a gentle shake—if it feels wobbly, that's a red flag. If possible, ask the sales staff what material the frame is made from. Real wood frames tend to be the best, but composite wood can also be durable, though it's harder to evaluate just by looking. Tap the frame gently to listen for any rattling sounds, which could indicate poor quality.

10. Sofa Fillings

The material used to fill the sofa cushions greatly impacts comfort. You want to make sure the filling is dense enough to support you but soft enough to be comfortable. Look for high-quality foam or down filling, and if possible, open a zipper on the cushion to inspect the interior. The quality of the filling will affect how long your sofa retains its shape, so choosing one with good material can ensure it lasts longer.

Make Your Sofa Choice Count!

Choosing the perfect sofa for your home is about more than just picking something that looks good. The comfort, durability, and functionality are all key factors that will make a huge difference in how much you enjoy your sofa. By keeping these 10 details in mind, you'll be able to select a sofa that's not just stylish, but also supportive and long-lasting. Happy sofa shopping, Lykkers!
