Nahanni National Park, located deep in Canada’s Northwest Territories, covers 4,760 square kilometers of remote, breathtaking wilderness.
It offers towering mountains, deep canyons, roaring rivers, and dense forests — an amazing escape into pure nature. Before planning our trip, let’s explore what makes this park so special.
Visitors must obtain a wilderness permit to enter Nahanni, which costs about US$22 per person per day. This permit is required for hiking, camping, kayaking, and other activities to help protect the fragile environment.
Permits can be purchased online or at visitor centers in nearby towns before arriving. It’s important to plan ahead since the number of visitors is limited.
The best time to visit is from June to early September, when temperatures range from 50°F to 77°F (10°C to 25°C). During summer, trails are clear, rivers accessible, and daylight hours can last up to 18 hours, giving us plenty of time to explore.
Mornings and evenings can be cool, sometimes dropping to about 41°F (5°C), so packing layers is essential. Outside this season, heavy snow and ice close most access points and services.
Getting to Nahanni requires planning due to its remote location:
Fly to Simpson Airport:
Flights from Edmonton to Simpson cost roughly US$300 to 500 one-way. From Simpson, we arrange a charter flight or helicopter into the park, which can cost around US$400 to 550 round trip per person. These small aircraft offer spectacular aerial views of the park.
Drive + Charter Flight:
Driving from Edmonton to Simpson is about 745 miles (1,200 km), taking around 15 hours. This option lets us see northern landscapes along the way. From Simpson, charter flights as above are needed.
Guided Tours:
Tour operators offer packages including transport, guides, and accommodations. Prices start from about US$1,500 to 2,000 for multi-day trips, providing easier logistics but higher costs.
Camping in the Park:
Campsites cost around US$8 to 18 per night. They offer basic amenities like fire pits and composting toilets but no showers or running water. Visitors must bring their own gear and pack out all waste to preserve the environment.
Lodging in Simpson:
Hotels or lodges in Simpson charge between US$75 to 150 per night, often including hot showers, Wi-Fi, and meals. Staying here means scheduling daily flights or drives to the park.
- Hiking: Trails range from short walks to challenging backcountry routes. We need good hiking boots, sufficient food and water, maps, and wildlife safety spray for protection.
- Kayaking: Kayaking tours on the South Nahanni River usually cost between US$110 to 220 per day, including gear and guide instruction. This adventure offers a unique view of canyons and wildlife.
- Photography: The best times for photos are sunrise and sunset. Bring weather-resistant camera gear and check local forecasts to capture perfect shots.
- Cell service is limited. Always share your itinerary with family or friends before heading out.
- Bring layered, waterproof clothing, insect repellent, first-aid supplies, and enough food and water.
- Respect wildlife by keeping a safe distance and never feeding animals.
- Follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out all trash and stick to marked trails.
- Prioritize safety by adhering to park rules during hiking, kayaking, and camping.
